Empower owns a fleet of transportable medium-speed diesel generating plants that provide affordable, flexible and simple power generation solutions. Medium-speed engines, used for marine propulsion and industrial power generation, are best suited to demands for continuous or near-continuous operation. Their robust construction combines maximum availability with major cost-savings achieved by operating on heavy fuel oil (HFO), a relatively cheap by-product of the petroleum refining process.
Most transportable power solutions use high-speed, conventional diesel engines. These only run on light fuel oil (LFO), a premium quality automotive fuel up to twice the price of HFO. Given that fuel will be about 80% of the operating cost of any liquid-fuel power plant, the potential savings of using HFO over LFO are overwhelming.
Empower’s transportable fleet includes both generation units and auxiliary modules, that assemble into a complete and fully integrated power plant. We use two basic generating units, manufactured by MAN Diesel of Germany and Wärtsilä of Finland. Both units are able to operate long term at maximum output and require low levels of maintenance.
Installation of the generation and auxiliary modules is quick and straightforward: civil engineering work is limited to site clearance and fencing, building of access roads and simple concrete foundations for each generating set. Empower or the fuel supplier would build a bulk fuel tank on site unless one is there already.
All the equipment will arrive completely modularised and ready for installation, taking only weeks from access to site to power production; instead of years as with a large fixed power plant. Once the plant is installed, Empower will operate and maintain the equipment to provide a cost-effective and reliable power supply for as long as the client requires it.
